How Not to Organize In-House Experts: Lessons From Boeing
Two Boeing 737 Max disasters that claimed hundreds of lives illustrate the stark lesson that poorly organizing employee expertise can have severe consequences. Managers must thoughtfully place and value experts to unlock their workforce’s potential. An in-depth field study found that how experts are matched to job roles and grouped in departments and projects, and how expertise is labeled, significantly affects outcomes. The author shares four recommendations for organizing in-house experts.
