Companies have a better likelihood of effecting a successful corporate reinvention if they don’t try to build from scratch or protect their core business. Those that succeed identify and take advantage of embedded capabilities that already exist inside the organization but can be repurposed. The authors argue that these capabilities, which they call kernels of reinvention, are powerful anchors around which new businesses can be built.
